Truvada as PrEP in Canada

On February 26th, 2016, Health Canada approved Truvada to reduce the risk of HIV infection.  Yes, we’re talking about PrEP (HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis).  Truvada is the first medication approved to reduce the risk of HIV.   Truvada combines two HIV antiretroviral drugs in one pill, and is highly effective at reducing the risk of HIV when taken as prescribed by HIV-negative people.

Truvada currently costs between $800 and $1000 per month.  People who can’t afford this amount, or who don’t have private prescription drug insurance benefits, will have to get Truvada’s cost covered under government-run public drug programs.

Common Drug Review and cost-coverage under public drug plans

The big question now is whether the cost of Truvada for PrEP will be covered under government-run public drug programs throughout Canada—federal, provincial and territorial.  [It is already covered in Quebec.]  The next step in the process to get Truvada for PrEP listed on public formularies is the Common Drug Review.  As part of the Common Drug Review, patient groups are invited to make patient input submissions.  This is a chance to have your voice heard by the experts who will recommend whether Truvada for PrEP is a cost-effective way to reduce HIV transmission and should be listed on public drug programs. More information on Truvada for HIV PrEP

PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis.  Prophylaxis means prevention. HIV PrEP refers to the ongoing use of an HIV antiretroviral medication by an HIV-negative person to reduce their risk of getting HIV.  Truvada is an oral medication that combines, in one pill, fixed doses of two chemical compounds (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and emtricitabine (FTC)) that fight HIV.  When taken in combination with other anti-HIV medications, Truvada is used to treat HIV infection in HIV-positive people.  Truvada taken alone has proven safe and highly effective at preventing HIV-negative people from getting HIV.
